The University of Texas Dell Medical School invites undergraduate and graduate students to apply for a 15-week spring apprentice program designed to provide aspiring health care leaders with a unique experience working in a health system devoted to transforming the way people get and stay healthy. Requirements: • Must be a University of Texas undergraduate, graduate or post-doctoral student in the Austin, Texas area. Graduates of UT Austin may apply if they have graduated no earlier than December 2015. • Interest in health care delivery, public health, health management or health policy.
• Ability to work an average of 10 hours per week over the period of the 15-week apprenticeship. • Must be able to attend the apprentice welcome celebration on Jan. 22 from 4-5 p.m. • Must be able to attend and present at the apprentice poster presentation on May 7 from 12-2 p.m. • Must be able to attend at least two of the following dates for professional development workshops held from 4-5 p.m.: Feb. 5, March 6 and April 2. • All undergraduate apprentices must enroll in UGS 310, 320L or 320L with II flag, as appropriate.
This will be arranged based upon the year of the apprentice and the nature of the apprentice’s work. For graduate level apprentices, course credit will be arranged with the apprentice’s department in accordance with their degree plan. Activities: • Apprentices will work alongside Dell Med faculty and staff on new and ongoing initiatives and research projects in areas such as pediatrics, psychiatry, the Learning Health System, surgery and perioperative care, diagnostic medicine and the Texas Health Catalyst. • Apprentices will propose, design and implement a self-initiated project, or assist an existing faculty/staff initiative that will benefit Dell Med, the University of Texas community, or the Austin/Travis County community. • Apprentices will design, create and present an academic poster at the end of the semester to Dell Med faculty and staff.
• Professional development through workshops taught by Dell Med faculty, industry leaders and community leaders. • Networking with other apprentices and Dell Medical School faculty and staff. • Mentoring and professional development coaching from world-class leaders in health innovation. • Community service project opportunities. • Invitations to attend Dell Med talks and workshops.
Learning Outcomes: • Describe the principles of improving health in the community in keeping with the of the Dell Medical School. • Explain how a focus on comprehensive care contributes to improved health outcomes.
• Demonstrate how applying design thinking methodologies, project management skills, communication techniques and analytical thinking can advance health innovation. • Demonstrate leadership skills pertinent to the health environment.
• Describe how to creatively approach unstructured problems and ambiguity in the health environment.
