Not only are the literal events of the narrative hectic and mind-bending, but after several readings and re-evaluations, a metaphorical interpretation begins to surface as well that would drive even the most sane and logical person completely crazy.

The story is a story within itself and that story is meant to be a reflection of you. How the hell that even makes sense, I do not know. Basically, the protagonist of the story, we'll call him reader #1, sits down in his favorite chair, made of green velvet (yes, that's important later on) to read a novel. Quickly, he gets wrapped up in its contents and swept up into the sub-reality of the story.
So, you, the actual you (we'll call you reader #2), are now reading a story as read by reader #1. Or perhaps you and reader #1 are one in the same. You are both reading a story; you are both aware only of this sub-reality, removed from your own. As the story concludes, the antagonist of the story being read by both you and reader #1 looms over the protagonist and readies himself to strike. Just as he does, however, the narrator takes a brief hiatus to describe the chair in which the protagonist sits. It's a chair made of green velvet.
