MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. When used in conjunction with images of the original arcade game's ROM and disk data, MAME attempts to reproduce that game as faithfully as possible on a more modern general-purpose computer. MAME can currently emulate several thousand different classic arcade video games from the late 1970s through the modern era. Offenders MAY be banned!! So I'm setting up my MAME cabinet with an X-Arcade Tankstick and I'm having control issues. The x-arcade.cfg file on the manufacturer's website is for a version of MAMEPlus from 2010. The one in the MAME 0.176 archive is for. I dunno, an ancient older X-Arcade model? Does anyone have, or have a pointer to, a ctrlr.cfg file for the Tankstick on the newest MAME version?
Ironically, I can't just configure the controls myself because of a bug in MAME 0.176b that makes the keyboard config controls appear offscreen.
OK, going in order right from the very start, first, from the desktop go into Start>Control Panel>Hardware>Game Controllers and make sure the joystick is actually installed in your computer. Then in your MAME go to Default Game Options>Controllers and check Enable Joystick Input.
If your UI is anything like mine there will also be an option there for Default Input Layout and you can choose X-Arcade from the drop down menu. Finally, once you're running any game you can press the tab key to access a menu that will let you set the controller (globally or for each individual game) plus many other options. The basic controls of the tab menu are: arrow keys = navigate enter = select esc = cancel delete is also useful to clear each joystick function and re-enter them again if necessary. Some games have the option to input the diagonal directions (down left, up right, etc.) Don't bother with that though. All you need is Up, Down, Left and Right. Let me know how it goes for you.
I have a question. If one mame32 works, then why not go with that? I use mame32 with a gameex frontend. And for my laptop I use mameui plus plus so I can play online. If you want to use the later, make sure you follow the above post to the letter.
Xarcade utility is not the same as testing with your computer via control panel>game controllers. I just did it with a joystick I had laying around and had the same issue until I tested through the computer first, then opened mameui. Perhaps this is a bug.
I will look futher into it. If you figure it out, please post and share your solution. Targur, can you please clarify whether or not you are able to connect the X-Arcade joystick to your PC. You've said a couple of times that it has no USB adapter, which makes me think you cannot connect it to your PC. On the other hand you've also said that the controller checks out in the X-Arcade utility program, which makes me think you can connect it to your PC. I'm confused.
Perhaps you could also provide us with some info on your system specs and the full names and version numbers of the MAMEs you are using. Help us to help you.
